Admin_Bio History
On June 30, 1929 the War Memorial and Cenotaph was unveiled at a ceremony officiated by Canadian general, Sir Arthur Currie. This monument is considered one of the finest such monuments in Canada, having been designed by noted Canadian sculptor, Walter Seymour Allward. Allward used two principle bronze figures to represent the enemy (figure recoiled with arm over face) and the Canadian soldier (figure standing erect, sword at his side and hand extended outward as a warning to the enemy not to advance). Allward intended that a row of evergreens be planted behind the memorial and receipts late in project indicate that they were purchased. Allward also specified that no plaques be installed on the Memorial but some have been installed over the decades since construction. (from Randall Robertson, September 1995).
Walter Seymour Allward was born in Toronto in 1876. His first major commission as a sculptor was the Northwest Rebellion monument at Queens Park. Later, the South African War Memorial (1910), Baldwin and Lafontaine monument, Parliament Hill, Ottawa (1912) and the William Lyon Mackenzie memorial at Queens Park (1937). His most famous commission was the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy Ridge, France. The Vimy Memorial took 10 years to complete and was unveiled in 1936. Allward was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy (RCA). He died in Toronto in 1955. His son, Hugh L. Allward was a noted architect who designed Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto and the Veterans Administration Building in Ottawa.
Some of the records in this fonds detail a controversy between the Committee and the Red Cross Society over use of funds.
The Citizen's War Memorial is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

Date of Creation 2

Extent

1 box

Admin_Bio History
Even as the war against Germany drew to a close, the battle of the Atlantic went grimly on. In the last 5 months of the war, German U-Boats sank a half million tons of Allied shipping. The continuing danger of submarine attack meant that Canadian anti-submarine sea and air forces were still required in European and Canadian waters even towards the end of the war. (adapted from "Valour Remembered", Veterans Affairs, 1994).
Otto Laderach stated in notes with accession file: "I had the opportunity to translate many German documents and signals originating from the German Naval High Command during my service in the Second World War." Laderach was born in Switzerland as so was fluent in German. This may explain why he had German technical manuals, etc.

Custodial History

Scope and Content
This fonds consists of correspondence, photographs and other material relating to Laderach service in the Royal Canadian Navy, including mechanical drawings rendered by Laderach for HMCS "Warrior", Canada's first aircraft carrier; material relating to his career as a draftsman with Canadian General Electric, Peterborough (CGE); also technical journals from German U-boat 190 that were turned over to Lt. Bartlett Thomas Mills (1870-1939) and Matilda "Tilly" Hooper Mills (1876-1975) were born in Pontypridd, southern Wales. They emigrated to Canada, settling in Peterborough around 1911. Bartlett Mills worked as a painter/decorator in Peterborough, specializing in marbelling and graining. He grained the doors and pillars inside St Paul's Presbyterian Church. He died suddenly in October 1939. Matilida Mills returned to Wales for a short visit just prior to the Second World War, (her children: Ethel, Vivian, Arthur, Alfred, Lillian and Gladys remained in Peterborough). Once war was declared Matilda Mills was not allowed to make a return voyage since all ships were taken for the war effort. After the War she returned to Peterborough and remained in the City for the rest of her life. Her daughter Ethel Mills (born 1911 in Ashburnham) married Harold Lancaster, August 26, 1944. Title
Parks Studio fonds

Date of Creation 1
1937

Date of Creation 2
1980 (predominate: 1940-1970)

Extent
70,000 negatives

Admin_Bio History
The Parks Studio was in operation from around 1918 until 1980 under both Lewis R. and Gordon Parks, two prominent professional photographers working in Peterborough. Lewis R. Parks (1899-1993) was a self-taught photographer who had worked for the Air Force during World War I installing aerial cameras. His first business opened up in 1918 or 1919 on Townsend street, but he shortly moved to Park street right in front of General Electric. Lewis at first only did photo-developing and printing, until 1927 when he added a photographic studio. He moved again to 208 Charlotte street in 1938. He did his own aerial photography, having purchased an aerial camera at a war- surplus store. He also produced postcards for local business and resorts. The Examiner used the Parks Studio for a number of years until they got their own darkroom.

Gordon Parks (1929- ) first worked for his father as a child in the studio's darkroom on Saturdays. He also used the studio to process photographs for his high school's yearbook. He joined his father's studio in 1951 after graduating from Shaw Business College (business administration) and Ryerson (photography) both in Toronto. Gordon and Lewis worked well together as a father and son studio until his father retired in 1966. Under Gordon's influence Parks Studio was greatly expanded and a camera shop was added. When color photography came in, he convinced his father to send away for the photo-finishing and focus on professional photography. The studio's last location until 1980, when the studio closed, was at the corner of Brock and Aylmer Streets.

Custodial History
First created by Lewis Parks, ownership of the negatives passed to his son Gordon, upon his father's retirement in 1966. Gordon Parks sold the negatives to the Peterborough Centennial Museum & Archives over the winter of 1999. The negatives are broken down into those produced by Lewis Parks (approximately 1937-1951); by both Lewis and Gordon Parks (1951-1966); then solely by Gordon Parks (1966-1980). The Parks Studio was established in 1918 and these early negatives survived until the early 1950's, when they were disposed of by the Studio. At the same time, the original negatives from Cripps and Morris Duke studios were disposed of also.

Scope and Content
The fonds comprises of approximately 70,000 negatives, representing the surviving body of work of two of Peterborough's best known professional photographers. They document daily life, local business and industry, urban development, and key events in the history of Peterborough from the late 1930's to 1980. Over 40% of the fonds consists of historical subject matter, including special events, aerial photography, postcard photography, downtown Peterborough, commercial contracts and photo documentation of major construction projects (i.e. Trent University and Peterborough Square). Of particular interest is the series on the Military Training Centre that operated at Morrow Park during World War II. The remaining 60% are made up of portraiture (i.e. family and wedding portraits, studio portraits for commercial clients, high school graduation and yearbook photographs). Each negative was identified and dated by Parks Studio staff. This fonds was designated as Canadian Cultural Property of "Outstanding Significance and National Importance" by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board in September 1999.

Kidd Collection (Roy Studio Military Portraits)

Date of Creation 1

Date of Creation 2

Extent
711 photographic prints (8 x 10 primarily) /
4 archival bankers boxes /
1 standard archival box /
15 panoramic photographs /
1 small photograph album /
2 envelopes of negatives

Admin_Bio History
The Roy Studio collection represents the work of three generations of professional photographers (Robert M. Roy, Fred Roy and Rob Roy) covering the period 1896 to 1992. The majority of images were captured on either glass plate negatives or safety film. Between 1939 and 1945 over 700 young enlisted men and women posed for a formal portrait (in uniform) at the Roy Studio. According to members of the Roy family, there might weel have been over 30 portrait sittings each day.
Edwin Curtin, was an instructor at the Military Training Centre, located at the Peterborough Exhibition Grounds, Morrow Park from October 9, 1940 to December 31, 1941. He received an honourable discharge but re-enlisted in mid 1942. Sergeant Curtin had a heart murmur so could not participate in combat. The drill hall located at the Training Centre, housed a rifle range, entertainment centre. The Centre likely processed as many as 2000 people at any single time. Mr Curtin noted that many trainees came from very rural areas and had to be taught virtually everything. Many had not seen two storey buildings or cars prior to enlistment. In September 1944 Edwin Curtin went overseas first to England, then later to Holland and Belgium. In later years Curtin was a member of Peterborough City Council. Irene Kidd-Curtin was an Air Force wireless operator, stationed at Rockcliffe, near Ottawa, then Montreal and then Rivers, Manitoba with the Central Navigation School. Irene was in the LAW (Leading Air Women) Service. She remained in Manitoba for the duration of the war. Irene's brother Earl Kidd was killed in a bombing raid over Germany and is buried in a military cemetery in Germany.
This photographic collection was acquired by the City Archives in 1995 through the generosity of Edwin and Irene (Kidd) Curtin, in memory of Elmo Kidd and family.

Custodial History
These photographs were produced by the Roy Studio between 1939-1945. Until purchased by the donors, they were stored in the Roy-Lyon Archives, Amora Portrait Studio (formerly Roy Studio) on Hunter Street. Other similar photos of other soldiers are likely among the remaining Roy collection of glass and safety film negatives. In June 1994, some of these portraits were displayed at a special D-Day anniversary exhibit at Lansdowne Mall. Later in 1994 Edwin and Irene Kidd-Curtin offered to purchase all of these portraits from the Roy-Lyon Archives and donate them to the PCMA in memory of Elmo Kidd and family. Elmo Kidd is Irene's father. Irene's brother Earl Kidd was killed in action during World War Two. Earl Kidd was in the RCAF.

Scope and Content
Over 700 photographic portraits produced by the Roy Studio of Peterborough and area men and women who enlisted in the Canadian armed services during World War Two. Additional material include: several panoramic photographs of staff and recruits at the Military Training Centre, located at Peterborough Exhibition Grounds; photographs of members of the Kidd family. The Kidd Collection is the single largest photographic acquisition in the City Archives. It was donated in memory of the Elmo Kidd family by Edwin and Irene (Kidd) Curtin. A permanent exhibit of prints from this collection is on display in the front foyer, Peterborough City Hall. Prints from the collection will be displayed on a rotating basis so that the entire collection can be viewed by the public.
