Summer Discovery 2009

We offer full-day week-long programs for children (grades 1 to 6).Our instructors are artists, scientists and child educators supported by a team of trained volunteers and Museum staff.

Drop-in Camps for JK and SK age children!*
Come for a morning; come for an afternoon; come for a day or the whole week! $15 per half day session.
Half day (9 - 12 or 1 - 4) and full day (9 - 4) drop-in programs are available for children who will be entering JK or SK.

You may register for Drop-in Camps in advance (there is a cap of 12 children). Please contact the Museum.

Location

All programs take place on Museum Grounds. We have two barrier free modular buildings with barrier free washrooms and air-conditioning. The outdoor portion of the programs is conducted in the beautiful Heritage Pavilion and on the Museum grounds. The Museum and its exhibits and services are also available.

Registrations and Costs

Beginning May 4, 2009 Contact Us to register by phone or in person, or register at the Peterborough Wellness Centre, Peterborough City Hall, Recreation Division and on-line through City of Peterborough recSERVE.

Each regular program is designed for children who wiil be entering Grades 1 to 6, with the exception of 'Art Journals' which is for grades 6 to 10. Each program has a registration cap of 20 so sign up early!

Cost is $140 for each week of full day (9-4) programming, ($115 for the 4-day week of August 4 to 7).
$ 15 for each half day JK/SK Drop-in.
City subsidies are available.

Please bring your own peanut-free snacks and lunch if applicable. Juice will be provided. Programs take place both indoors and outside so please come prepared for the weather.

If a program is full, you may request to be added to the waitlist. You will only be contacted if a spot becomes available. Please note we may only call once and will not leave a message. Feel free to leave additional phone numbers to ensure you can be reached easily when on a waitlist.

Summer Discovery Instructors

Amy Barron has been an instructor with Summer Discovery since 1998. This summer she returns with a concoction of activities to educate and entertain Peterborough’s young imaginations.

Susie Clarke is a certified Primary/Junior/Intermediate Teacher for the KPRDSB. She has been been a dance and fitness instructor for ten years and, for the past five summers, an employee of Kidz First, offering innovative day camps and childrens programming. Susie is looking forward to sharing her passion for teaching, dance, and fitness at the Museum this summer.

Jake Differ is an award-winning Canadian musician and children’s entertainer who has toured extensively with his child-friendly performances. Summer Discovery is thrilled to have Jake here for a full week program.

Ray Henderson is a professional actor and director, artistic director for Arbour Theatre’s children’s Christmas productions and producer of the successful 24 Hour Project. He is skilled in taking young people 'from pen to performance’.

Peter McMahon is one of Canada's only full-time science journalists. Having served as a long-time senior producer at DiscoveryChannel.ca and written for CTV.ca the Toronto Star, and YES Mag, he's currently working on the second in a series of kids` science experiment books for Kids Can Press, which hit bookshelves in Fall 2010.

Rebecca Reynolds earned her Expressive Arts Certificate at Haliburton School of the Arts and has more than 15 years experience instructing children of all ages with her creative, dynamic teaching style.

Theresa Rigg owns Backyard Heritage Discoveries and presents education programs at museums, schools and children’s centres. She returns to Summer Discovery after a sold-out March Break program.

Cheri Verge is owner/operator of Kidz First and brings her wealth of experience in creative children’s programming to the Peterborough Museum for Summer Discovery 2009.

Release, Waivers & Indemnity

The participant (or parent/guardian if the participant is under the age of 18), voluntarily assumes any risk of injury of damage in connection with the use of services or facilities and releases, discharges and agrees to indemnify and save harmless the City of Peterborough and its employees, agents and volunteers for any liability, claim, demand, or costs whatsoever incurred arising out o the participation of the participant in the program at the facility.

In the course of all program activities photos will be taken and audio and or visual recording may be made. The city of Peterborough reserves the right to use all photographs and videos of all our programs, participants, special events and facilities for promotional purposes.
