Map of the Preliminary Lines Surveyed for the Peterborough and Port Hope Railway in the Townships of Hope and Hamilton

Date of Creation 1
1853

Extent
1 plan

Admin_Bio History
Port Hope began planning for a railway north to Peterborough in 1853. The initial route was to Peterborough via a line near the west shore of Rice Lake, through South Monaghan to Peterborough. The Town of Peterborough however, was still committed to the Cobourg to Peterborough Railway and thus showed little interest in the Port Hope venture. So in 1855 the route was redirected to Lindsay, through Millbrook, Bethany and Omemee. The line to Lindsay was completed in 1857. In 1858 a spur line was built from Millbrook to Peterborough, once it became obvious that the Cobourg to Peterborough Railway with its bridge over Rice Lake, would be a failure. By 1871, the rail line was extended to Beaverton and then to Orillia by 1873. The Port Hope, Lindsay, Beaverton Railway became the Midland Railway in 1869.

Custodial History
This plan was deposited with the Peterborough Public Library several decades ago. In 2000 it was transferred to the City Archives as a preservation measure.

Scope and Content
A large plan showing proposed routes of the Port Hope to Peterborough Railway (later known as Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway, then Midland Railway), between Port Hope and South Monaghan. The plan shows several geographic and built features including: Molson Mill, mill pond north of Port Hope, Ganaraska River, Smith Creek, Ward's Hill, Port Hope Wharf, Lake Ontario, south shore of Rice Lake, Bewdley, Mrs Foe's Inn, features later known as the Oak Ridges Moraine, "ancient lake beach", Boundary Road (later Highway 28), Gravelled Road, first and second tollgates on Boundary Road and McCamus Hill. The plan was prepared at the Engineer's Office for the railway company, by John W. Tate, Civil Engineer.

Title
Balsillie Collection of Roy Studio Images /
Roy Studio fonds

Date of Creation 1
1896

Date of Creation 2
1992 [predominate: 1904-1950]

Extent
ca. 400,000 photographs ; b&w and col. negatives /
9 Roy Studio Registers /
ca. 1500 photographic prints ; b&w

Admin_Bio History
The Roy family documented almost every aspect of life and work in the City and region, for over three generations. The result is an exceptional visual record. The principle photographers at Roy Studio were:

Robert Maitland Roy (1842-1912):

Robert Maitland Roy established the Roy Studio, at 140 Hunter Street, in 1896. R. M. Roy was born in Bond Head and raised in Belleville. He worked in Belleville for several years in the engineering and purchasing division of the Midland Railway.

R.M. Roy moved to Peterborough at the age of 45 in 1887, where he was in charge of stores for the Midland Division of the Grand Trunk Railway.

In 1896 the GTR Railway laid off Mr Roy. This action forced a sudden and fortuitous career change for Roy. He decided to buy out Peter H. Green's photographic business on Hunter Street. Roy had always loved photography (along with sailing, sports and the outdoors) and soon flourished as a professional photographer.

R.M. Roy was also an accomplished and popular magician and amateur artist. He used these skills to stage several very popular lantern-slide shows in church halls and theatres in the region. Roy would create a 'stereo-scopic' presentation using two projectors and 'film dissolve' techniques to switch from one image to another.

His steam boat the 'Rob Roy' was a popular fixture on the Trent Canal and Kawartha Lakes. It was one of the first boats to pass through the Lift Lock when it opened in 1906.

The photograph studio was growing steadily with portrait work, commerical contracts and postcards. By 1906, it was reported in the Weekly Examiner that Roy Studio was turning out picture postcards at a rate of several thousand a week.

A devastating fire in the winter of 1904 nearly destroyed the Studio. The building was saved and Roy Studio was soon re-established. Over the decades ahead the Studio would be expanded and remodelled on several occassion.

R.M. Roy brought his son Fred into the business as a young man, along with other family members. R.M. Roy died in 1912. He was married to Maria Flagler.

Frederick Lewis Roy (1881-1950):

The Roy Studio fonds is dominated by the diverse work of Fred L. Roy. Fred Roy was born in Belleville on November 26, 1881.

Fred Roy documented almost all key events that occurred in Peterborough and surrounding area. He started working in the studio when he was 15 years old. He became sole owner of Roy Studio after his sister married and both parents had died.

Fred Roy was a gifted and prolific photographer. He was honoured with a Master of Photography degree from the Professional Photographers of America ( PPA ). In 1930 he won the gold medal at the PPA 's International 50th Anniversary. He was also Secretary of the Ontario Society of Photographers from 1912-1914 and President in 1916. Fred Roy received at least 25 photography awards in Canada and the United States, over his career.

Fred Roy not only photographed aspects of life in Peterborough but he also travelled throughout Canada and Europe. In 1931 he took over 200 photos of Jack Miner's sanctuary in Kingsville (later used in books and documentaries). In 1935 he travelled to Britain and photographed King George V reviewing the naval fleet at Southampton. In the Spring of 1937 he and his son Rob returned to England (on the Queen Mary) to photograph the Coronation of King George VI. He also secured assignments with the CPR while in England. Fred and Rob also met Baden Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement. In 1940 Fred Roy began filming the pioneer tourism documentary, "Call of the Kawarthas ".

Fred Roy was also busy doing photographic shoots for the Peterborough Examiner newspaper until they hired their own pool of photographers in the early 1940's. Roy in fact, was ahead of his time in photo journalism. In the days prior to 35mm cameras, it was virtually unheard of for a photo journalist to document 'everyday life', events and activities to the degree Fred Roy did. His talent and his love of photography very apparent when looking at these images.

Fred Roy served a term as City alderman for the 1940-1941 term. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club and served as its first president. He was president of the Boy Scouts Association, president of the Fish and Game Association, a board member of the Exhibition and a life member of the Red Cross Society.

Like his father, Fred was also an avid outdoorsman, hunter and boater. He loved golf and in his younger years enjoyed travelling the region in his motorcycle equipped with a side-car.

Fred Roy died, March 22, 1950 and is buried in Little Lake Cemetery. He and his wife Mona lived at 308 Rubidge Street for several years.

His wife was Mona Cavanah. She was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on February 3, 1886. Mona died on May 10, 1965 and is buried in Little Lake Cemetery.

Rob Roy (1923-2001):

Rob Roy joined the firm after the Second World War. Rob was trained by his father and he took courses at Rochester and Winona . He maintained the high quality work of Roy Studio for over 40 more years!

Rob Roy specialized in portrait photography. He also documented the major and routine events of Peterborough life - just as his father and grandfather had before him. Rob Roy retired in 1992 after nearly 50 years in the photography business. He and his wife Catharine live in Peterborough.

Other Roy Studio photographers included: Roy Pitchford, Alex Darling and Fred Cripps. Others working in the Studio over the years included: Mona Roy (wife of Fred L. Roy), Gladys Roy (Fred L. Roy's sister), Mrs R. M. Roy, Della Thompson Standish, Stewart Brown, Kate Masterson, Leila Spriggs and Judy White.

Custodial History
The fonds was created and maintained in the original Roy Studio basement storage area, from 1896 to 2000. In May and June of 2000, the entire fonds was carefully transferred to a purpose built storage facility in the Peterborough Public Library. The fonds is owned and managed by the by the City Archives / Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives (PCMA).

Scope and Content
The fonds consists of a tremendously comprehensive body of photographic negatives produced between 1896 and 1992 by the Roy Studio, Peterborough. Included are well over 400,000 glass plate and film photo negatives. The fonds documents most of the key events in Peterborough and area between 1904 and 1992. Subject matter captured on film includes: local industry and business, weddings, local government, conventions, entertainment and theatre, parades, sporting events (e.g. baseball, golf, hockey), outdoor recreation, public ceremonies, schools, churches, architecture (interior and exterior), daily life and work. The Studio also did special photo shoots for the local newspapers. They produced extensive postcard series and prepared advertising shoots for area factories like DeLaval, Quaker Oats, Peterborough Canoe Company, Westclox and Canadian General Electric. Roy Studio produced an extensive photographic record of the early years of the Peterborough Exhibition, also cottage life at Stoney Lake and the Kawarthas, major construction projects (e.g. Hunter Street Bridge, Trent Canal, Odeon Movie Theatre, Peterborough City Hall, etc), disasters such as the Quaker Oats fire, Turnbull Disaster, train and car accidents and fires. The Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary in Kingsville, is also well documented. Most of these photographs are part of either the "View Register" or "Boxed Plate" series. Another large component of the Roy fonds is portraiture. Roy Studio produced an outstanding body of artistic studio portraits, also wedding photos and family photos. Fred Roy was an avid outdoorsman, and the fonds includes extensive personal photographs of his hunting and fishing trips. Also included is a series of photographs taken by Fred Roy for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), that documents the coronation of King George VI in 1937. Other noteworthy portrait subjects include: Hall of Fame professional baseball player, Tris Speaker (1923). Senator Frank O'Connor, founder of Laura Secord Chocolate Company, Sir John and Lady Eaton, American statesman, William Jennings Bryan (1911), Prime Ministers R.B. Admin_Bio History

Fred L. Roy was born in 1881. He joined his father's photography firm (Roy Studio) when he was 15 years old. Fred was a gifted and artistic photographer. He had a masters degree in photography from the Professional Photographers of America and won several photography awards. Fred was also loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He died in 1950.

Custodial History
This material was created by R.M Roy and Fred L. Roy. After his death in 1950 it was in the custody of the Roy family. It was donated to the City Archives in August 2000.

Scope and Content
An addition to the Roy Studio fonds consisting of three files of newspaper clippings, journal articles, ephemera (e.g. six illustrated negative envelopes ranging in dates from about 1896 to 1930) related to Fred L. Roy, Roy Studio staff and studio operations; also two files and a portfolio containing examples of Roy Studio letterhead and stationary [ca.1908 to ca. 1950].

The Original Retail Store of the Adam Hall Ltd., Stove Manufacturers

Date of Creation 1
2001 (reproduction)

Extent
1 photograph : b&w ; 8 x 10

Admin_Bio History
Adam Hall Stove Company was established in Peterborough in under Thomas Lannin. In 1878 Adam Hall took over the business and began manufacturing iron stoves for the home, lumber camps, hotels and restaurants. Originally the company included a retail hardware and stove outlet (407 George Street) but by about 1910 began to focus exclusively on manufacturing. Adam Hall died in 1920 and the business was taken over by his sons. It appears that the Adam Hall Stove Company was out of business by the late 1930's - presumably it fell victim to the economic downturn of the Great Depression.

Custodial History
The original photograph was part of Adam Hall's personal papers. It remains in the custody of the Hall family.

Scope and Content
An interior photograph of the Adam Hall Stove Company retail outlet in downtown Peterborough, dating to about 1878. The photograph shows iron stoves, kettles, buckets, lanterns, tinware and other metalware products. Adam Hall is seen standing at the store counter (bearded, wearing cap).

Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School (PCVS) fonds

Date of Creation 1
[ca. 1890]

Date of Creation 2
[ca. 1980]

Extent
4.5 m of textual records

Admin_Bio History
Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School (PCVS) is one of the oldest schools in Ontario. Reverend Samuel Armour opened the first school in Peterborough on May 1, 1826. The school, originally known as the Peterborough Government School was first located in the back playground of present day Central Public School on Murray Street in Peterborough. It functioned as a public elementary school and the early Victorian equivalent to a public high school. As the population of Peterborough increased, public school students moved into smaller schools while the Grammar School high school) students stayed in the original school building. By 1854 the school trustees had leased an old church, on the corner of Hunter and Sheridan Streets, to hold the school but the student population soon grew too large. In 1855 plans to build a new school had begun. The new building was completed in 1859 and was intended to be used by both common and grammar school students. It was located where the present day Central School is built. The new school was known as the Union School. By 1868 the principal of the school asked that girls be allowed to attend grammar school. A new building was constructed west of the Union School to allow for the increased student population. In 1871, with a government bill abolishing the term grammar school and replacing it with collegiate, the Union School became the Peterborough Collegiate Institute (PCI). Due to overcrowding and various moves within the buildings it soon came time for the Collegiate to have its own building, separate from the public school. On August 1, 1907 the cornerstone for the new school was laid. The new school opened in 1908 on the corner of Aylmer and McDonnel Streets near the Armouries. In 1927 a vocational school was added to the P.C.I. After this date, the high school was known as Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational Institute (PCVS). Students and staff at the school helped in a variety of projects including creation and publication of the student monthly newsletter "The Collegiate Echoes" or simply, "The Echoes", which began publication in 1905. The school has also established an outstanding drama and theatre arts programme. One of the PCI graduates was Prime Minister and Nobel Laureate, Lester B. Pearson. Pearson attended PCI in the first decade of the 20th century, during the period when his father, Rev. Edwin A. Pearson, was Minister of George Street Methodist Church. Another prominent graduate was Dr Peter Demos, an MIT nucleur physicist, who in the early 1960's served as a science advisor to President John F. Kennedy. A distinguished member of the PCI/PCVS faculty was HRH Kenner, Principal at PCVS until his death in the mid 1940's. In the 1970's and 1980's various attempts were made to close PCVS, but fierce public protests have stopped all efforts to date. In the 1990's an extensive restoration project was undertaken at PCVS to restore the original architectural character of many interiors including the main hallways. The exterior of the building was re-painted in 2000 using a period colour scheme. (Taken from: "Echoes Sesquicentennial Edition." 1977 and Trent University Archives.)

Custodial History

Insurance Plan of the City of Peterborough, Ont.

Date of Creation 1
1929, May

Date of Creation 2
1943, July (revised and reprinted)

Extent
1 bound insurance plan (ca. 35 pages) : col. ; 63 x 53 cm

Admin_Bio History
Charles E. Goad (1848-1910) initiated fire insurance mapping in Canada in 1875. These plans were produced to assist insurance companies with risk assessments in an era when building fires were extremely common. The plans provided detailed information on the nature and construction of every building in a given community. They showed size, shape, construction materials and occupants, along with street numbers, property lines, proximity to fire protection equipment and so on. C.E. Goad produced detailed plans of most towns and cities in Canada. Originally, these plans were printed on large sheets and bound, using a scale of 1 inch = 50 feet. Periodically existing plans would be updated and new sections would be cut and pasted into the existing plan books. By the 1950's the format was reduced in size for easier storage and access. The Charles E. Goad Company was eventually replaced by the Canadian Underwriters Association.

Custodial History
The fire insurance plan was loaned by the Underwriters Survey Bureau to J.R. Sinclair. Its later custodial history remains unclear. In August 2001 it was discovered in a landfill site in Perry Township by landfill workers. It had apparently been disposed of with other estate contents. The township contacted Betty Drain at the City of Peterborough and she made arrangements for the plan to be shipped to the City Archives.

Scope and Content
A bound fire insurance plan for the City of Peterborough revised and reprinted in July 1943 (from the May 1929 plan). The plan was published by the Underwriters Survey Bureau of Canada. It shows the location and nature of all buldings in the City, including business, industry, parks and houses.

In 1906 Brinton and Preen Carpets of Kinderminster, England, one of Great Britains most prominent textile firms, established a Canadian branch factory in Peterborough. The first plant manager was G.P. Preen. Gripper looms and other equipment invented by Brinton's were shipped over from England. In 1908 the company employeed over 100 people. In 1945 Brinton Carpets opened another plant in Lindsay to manufacture carpet yarns. The Peterborough plant was used primarily for weaving after the expansion to Lindsay. In 1966 the company was taken over by Armstrong Cork Carpets. One of the most popular Brinton carpet lines was the Sar-U-Kan Persion style carpet. Balsillie Collection of Roy Studio Images (Roy Studio fonds) - additions

Date of Creation 1
1911

Extent
3 photographs : b&w

Admin_Bio History

These prints were pulled while processing the View Register series of the Balsillie Collection of Roy Studio Images.

Scope and Content
A series of three original Roy Studio photographic prints relating to the Barnardo Home in Peterborough. One photograph (View #807) shows a group of young Barnardo girls posing on the steps outside Margaret Cox Home. The other two photographs (View #976) were taken during a public Barnardo Home reception at Hazel Brae in 1911 and consist of group photos of staff and Barnardo girls.

City of Peterborough - Finance and Administration Services fonds /
Book of Remembrance, City and County of Peterborough

Date of Creation 1
1962

Date of Creation 2
2002

Extent
1 bound volume : ink and watercolour ; (23 pages, 4 fly leaves, 2 leather covers)

Admin_Bio History
The Book of Remembrance project was launched in 1961 at the request of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 452. The Peterborough Memorial Book Committee was then formed to coordinate financing and production. City Alderman Gordon Monkman was appointed committee chair. The Book Committee was also responsible for compiling the hundreds of names to be commemorated using casualty lists and other readily available military records.
Talented local artists were selected to design and create the Book. James Ridyard rendered each names in calligraphy. John Ledingham illuminated the pages with ornate ink and watercolour motifs. Oscar Schlienger, consulting artist on the project, sketched a design for the leather front cover based on the "Angel of the Dead" figure on the Confederation War Memorial. Mrs Clarence Boorman hand-tooled Schlienger's design into the cover.
Over the years some local citizens have noted that the names of loved ones were missing from the Book of Remembrance. In 2001 City Councillor, Glenn Pagett, spearheaded an initiative to update the Book. The Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives (PCMA) was given the responsibility for the project. Primary research yielded seventy-one new names and five new pages have been added to the original Book. Each of these new pages has been beautifully hand illuminated in the same decorative style as the original. The additional names were rendered in hand painted calligraphy. Museum conservators painstakingly cleaned and repaired the Book to ensure its on-going preservation. Ultraviolet radiation filters have been installed over all lighting and windows in the City Hall foyer to help protect the Book from cumulative light damage. A digital version of the Book is now on the Internet. The Book of Remembrance has been formally incorporated into the holdings of the City Archives but will remain on permanent display at City Hall.

Custodial History
The Book of Remembrance was designed and created in 1962 as a special project financed jointly by the City and County of Peterborough. It has remained on permanent public display in the City Hall foyer. In 2002 the City agreed to transfer on-going preservation and stewardship of the Book to the City Archives in the PCMA, but the Book will remain on permanent display at City Hall. The formal transfer of custody took place at special City Council meeting held to commemorate Remembrance Day on October 28, 2002. Admin_Bio History

Admin_Bio History
Peterborough first considered constructing a new City Hall in the mid 1930's. In 1939, W.G. Morrow died and left substantial financial resources to the City for the construction of a large, modern City Hall. In 1943 City Council established a "City Hall Committee" to investigate space needs for a new facility. In 1948 the City expropriated lands and houses comprising an entire city block between Murray and McDonnel Streets for the construction site. Existing houses and other structures were then demolished. In November 1949 architectural plans (in the "contemporary Georgian Style") tendered by F.H. Marani and R.S. Morris, Architects of Toronto, were accepted by Council. Eastwood Construction Company won bids to build the structure and construction of the new City Hall at 500 George Street North, began early in 1950. The cornerstone was laid by Hon, Leslie Frost, Premier of Ontario on December 1, 1950. The building is clad in limestone quarried in Queenston, Ontario. Another interesting feature is the floor map inside the foyer. It was designed by City Engineer, E.A. Chalmers. The City Hall also has a clock tower, with the dome originally clad in gold leaf. The clock works were contracted to Grant and Loucks of Peterborough and they had the clock built by Stromberg Time Corporation of New York. The new City Hall was officially opened on October 26, 1951 by G.R. Chamberlain, Mayor of the City of Peterborough, England.
